Planning for 2012 to be your best year on record…!

A warm welcome to all,
I hope you had a great Christmas and managed to take some time to reflect on the past 12 months and more importantly, the next 12.
The gap between Christmas and New Year is an ideal time to start putting your plan together as there should be no excuses to find a few spare hours to put down on paper what you want to achieve next year and the steps that are going to get you there. I have been doing this for the past 4 years now so not only has it helped tremendously with my development but also I hope it shows that I practice what I preach.
[subscribelocker] So what things do I consider in my planning? I have listed these below and have made them quite vague as they need to be specific to you not me. Write down all your thoughts that pop into your head initially and then go back through the answers and apply logic and structure to them in the form of a written plan. This can be specific to your trading or life in generally. Have some fun, don’t think that the wild and wonderful goals you have are not attainable.
1. What do you want to achieve? This time next year, what things do you want to be proud of accomplishing?
2. What is your purpose for wanting to achieve these goals?
3. What steps do you need to take daily, weekly, monthly to get you there?
4. What rewards and punishments will you put in place to reward positive behaviour and to punish bad?
5. Who is going to be part of your positive circle of influence to help provide the environment you need to succeed?
6. What further tools / skills do you require to help you get to your goals more efficiently.
These are broad areas which will get you thinking. Then you will need to construct your plan in a way that you will understand and act upon. Place this plan somewhere you will see it daily and read it regularly. I know I am not the best with reviewing things regularly as life sometimes get’s in the way so I go to the extreme lengths of setting myself calendar reminders every few weeks to take 10 and review my plan. Here I will reflect on how I am doing against my plan and put measures in place to ensure I am on track. Do not be afraid to evolve your plan to suit the ever changing world that you live in.
I want to leave you with one final thought. Please firstly read the following article a good friend of mine sent me recently – It may sound a little morbid but there are some key points in this which really go to prove the importance of having a plan…it will leave you with fewer regrets later in life as plans go a long way to ensuring that you achieve everything you want to in trading and in life.
Another quote which I heard recently which really resonated with me was ”The road to success has many tempting parking spaces” which in a nutshell means that you will, many times, want to fall off plan, stop following your plan, even forget your plan exists. Sticking to a plan wont be easy, I can promise you that, but success and that amazing feeling of accomplishment only arrives after a sustained period of effort. Remember that its because of this that we feel so good about what we have done.
So to reinforce, take time to put your 2012 plan together this week. It is your road map to get you to where you want to be in the most efficient time. It’s your blueprint for success, so make it, evolve it and most importantly, follow it and capture the benefits it will bring.
A happy and prosperous 2012 to you all
Best wishes

Great post Tom! I’ll definitely take your advice forward and see how it works for me. Do you happen to know a good template from which I can start on? Thanks, Fahim.

[…] The reality is that any task or goal takes as much as we allow for them to take and by setting non-negotiable deadlines and by not allowing much time to get the results we expect, it won’t take much time to start seeing BIG RESULTS.  My dear bro, last year had given some very good tips on what he considered in his planning, here his link: ‘Planning for 2012 to be your best year on record…!’ […]
